Sustainable style: my why

My dear clients,

Welcome to the Tailored Stylist Sustainable Style Club! I’m so grateful you’re here.

To kick off the Club, I wanted to share my WHY with you. (It is a longer email – I promise future emails will be shorter!)

In 2021, I bought a bathing suit and leggings from companies that touted their upcycling of plastic water bottles pulled from the ocean to make my clothes. I love the ocean and so I was 100% behind the idea. Then I learned that garments made from plastic (no matter where it originated) can never be recycled or upcycled into something else – thereby ending the future of these clothes with me – they will never biodegrade and cannot be upcycled. Ugh.

We know that sustainability is a trend in the fashion industry right now. The pandemic sent shock waves through the fashion world and many people hoped that this would be the time for the industry to change for the better. Unfortunately, that’s not what happened.

What happened is that we have a LOT of greenwashing. Messages from companies that make it sound like their products are sustainably and ethically produced and upcycled in ways that are good for the planet. However, the reality is that there is massive, systemic change that needs to happen. We collectively *sigh* – this situation can feel overwhelming and depressing for a busy person who wants to look her best.

There is hope though! We can create change with incremental changes in our own behavior by wearing the clothes we *already* own and by purchasing products from companies who are *actually* working in sustainable and ethical ways. (We can also demand political, social, environmental change at all levels! More on that in the future.)

So this is why we are here, together, looking to make change. I will bring you bite-sized information that will help you do more with what you have and make informed choices when you’re buying new clothes.

Thank you from me and the Earth, and future generations.

Yours in style,

Kevin xo

PS Are you in the market for chic shoes made of upcycled materials? A brand leading the way is Prota Fiori and I have a discount code for $100 off (for use before January 31st). Respond to this email for more information!
