What’s your why?
Hi there!
This week I have been thinking about the environment – it is hard not to when the news is full of climate disasters – and wild weather is affecting so much of the globe. Plus, I’m listening to Aja Barber’s book, Consumed, The Need for Collective Change: Colonialism, Climate Change and Consumerism (highly recommend!) and it is reminding me that everything in our lives is connected.
Which brings me to this week’s sustainable style thought: What is your WHY?
A close friend, who has a trendy style, recently told me one of my Instagram posts about the impact of fashion on the ocean resonated with her. This was a BIG moment for me – my message was getting through to people!!! Amazing.
It got me thinking that each of us needs to find our WHY for climate change, and our WHY for changing our consumption habits.
Do you love the forest?
Do you love the ocean? The lakes? The rivers?
Do you love the snow?
Do you love the animals?
Do you love the four seasons (not the hotel)?
Do you love the people?
What about this planet excites you? What brings you wonder? Focusing on the big picture can motivate us to make small changes that will have a collective impact.
For example, if you love the ocean, then you’ll be shocked that 12 million tonnes of plastic are poured into the ocean every year (source: sas.org.uk). The fashion industry is a key contributor of the plastic packaging, plastic bags and micro plastics that end up in the ocean. There are small steps that we, as consumers, can make to reduce plastics – not using single use plastics, purchasing goods that are made from natural (compostable) materials, etc.
This week, I challenge you to think about your WHY for conscious fashion – what part of the bigger picture of the planet will help you remember that even small changes to our consumption habits can make a big difference.
