We can all benefit from making repairs
Hi friends,
It is with a heavy heart after yesterday’s events in Texas that I write to you on the subject of repairs.
While it might have seemed that I’m belaboring the five Rs of sustainable fashion, today I’m feeling like we can all benefit from reviving the idea of repairs – making repairs beyond our closet – repairing what feels sometimes like a broken world…
But I shall keep to my lane and share today about the importance of clothing repairs. In this fast moving world, it is easy to dispose of our garments when they have holes or seem ‘broken’, however, usually there is little work (or time) involved in repairing our shoes, bags and clothing.
If you’re not one to do the repairs yourself, find and befriend a local tailor and/or shoe repair shop. I just picked up my repaired booties and am so happy with the result (images below). It required very little time to drop off and pick up the booties, and they have a new life. I’ve kept them out of landfill and on my feet – and I know you can do the same. Give it a try with one piece in your wardrobe this season. (And if you’re not sure where to get the repairs done, reach out!)
The quote below from John Steinbeck in Travels with Charley: In Search of America inspires me to think more carefully before disposing of clothes, or anything, for that matter. I hope it inspires you too.
“...I do wonder whether there will come a time when we can no longer afford our wastefulness…”
Hug your loved ones today,
Kevin xo
