The scariest thing about Halloween is the waste

Hi friends,

I have so many things to share with you! But I’ve promised to try to keep these emails brief. So, on this week leading up to Halloween, I share my top tip for how to manage your costume-related clothing – plus I’m sharing some tips from others because they are so helpful!

First I’ll address costumes – hands up if you buy a new Halloween costume each year! I’m totally guilty of this, especially for my kids. Buying a pre-made costume is so much easier than creating one myself, unfortunately. And so we acquire costumes over time – costumes that often start to clog up our closets.

Working in closets, I find that most people have many pieces that were bought for Halloween or similar such dress-up events but don’t serve a daily purpose in their wardrobe. What to do with all these things?

My top tip is to create a Dress-Up Box. (Thanks, Mom for teaching me this strategy!)

I like a big box that can be stored in a lesser-used closet and can fit everything from witches' hats to Hawaiian lays and everything in between. Any piece that is more of a costume piece than a daily-wear piece should reside in the Dress-Up Box. If you have young kids, this box might become hours of entertainment. If you don’t have kids, you might reach for it less frequently but the main point is that your day-to-day life will not be cluttered with costume pieces. And that, my friends, will help you create a closet that is functional and beautiful.

See the image below for other suggestions for being more mindful of your Halloween consumption this year. Shout out to @changingtidesfoundation for these tips.
