The one-in-one-out rule
Hello, friends!
After a few frantic weeks of participating in allllll of the holiday things, I have started saying no to things/events that don’t serve my family or me and soaking up the moments of unscheduled time. It feels so good! So, if you need the permission, I’m giving it to you – say no and do want you *feel* like doing this season!
Along a similar line of saying *no* to things we don’t need or want – I’m feeling the urge to clean out all the closets in my house – anyone else?!
It might be a form of procrastination (still lots of Christmas gifts to wrap! and a website to rewrite!) but today I’m putting it down to the need to clear space before bringing more things into our home – which, of course, reminds me of one of my favorite wardrobe curation rules – the one-in-one-out rule.
For those who have been here for a while or have worked with me one on one, the one-in-one-out rule is one of the best rules for maintaining a closet that is a delightful, welcoming space in your life. It is simple: when bringing a new piece of clothing into your closet, remove a piece that no longer serves you.
The trade doesn’t have to be a one-for-one switch – you don’t have to be replacing a cardigan with a cardigan – it can be something completely different. The point is that we are not continually adding clothes – we are reflecting on what we are actually wearing and removing the pieces that are no longer useful.
As you put away your Christmas or Hanukkah gifts this year, consider this rule, and give it a try. You may be surprised to find that your closet is one piece closer to being a space you truly love and enjoy.
On that note, I’ll be spending time with family and friends next week, so please accept all my love and best wishes for a wonderful holiday season! I am looking forward to continuing this adventure with you in 2023!
Happiest holidays,
