Shades of grey (and not in a chic, monochromatic way)

Hi friends!

With Earth Month in full swing, there is a lot happening in the sustainable fashion corner of the world and I want to share with you some of my recent discoveries – so this email is a little lighter in content (#youarewelcome).

I often remind myself that progress takes time and it took a long time to create this fashion mess, and will likely take longer to clean it up. Nothing is black and white – there are shades of gray everywhere – and we should still take time to celebrate progress.

Given the lack of transparency in the fashion supply chain, the reliance on oil, unsustainable growing practices and unethical working situations, I’m always on the lookout for a positive story or a brand doing good work for the planet, people and animals. Today I’m going to share two brands that are slowly moving the needle toward better practices. I don’t get any compensation for sharing – just passing along good news :)

  • Blueview Footwear – the world’s first biodegradable shoes launched last weekend and I got to try on a pair. They are super comfortable and perfect for a casual pair of shoes. The company is out of the University of California, San Diego (my alma mater) and they are using really interesting plant-based technology to produce these shoes. They are producing overseas but hoping to bring the supply chain closer to home as the company scales.

  • Passion Lilie – founded by another California native, this company is committed to creating sustainable products in ethical ways. I took a sewing class from the founder and her passion for social causes was inspiring. Passion Lilie has the perfect new cotton dress for spring and summer (or a button down for a man in your life). Note that some garments are made of cotton and some of organic cotton – for your informed purchasing!

And a little sustainable style inspiration for you – the look below is by Passion Lilie and Blue view Footwear, with earrings handmade by Anna in Berkeley (I do get a commission if you purchase from her jewelry and you get 15% off with code TAILORED).

Send me your favorite brands doing good work for people, planet and animals – and have a lovely week!

xo Kevin
